A Break from Botanics

Writer's picture: Heather GrahamHeather Graham

This week I had a break away from the gardens as Lynsey informed myself and Victoria that she was off, making it unnecessary to work at the gardens. Therefore, I chose to use my time wisely and focus on other on-going projects. Since being made aware of this ahead of time I ensured that on my previous visit I photographed more options to roll over onto this week. Giving the social media team plenty to choose from. I ended up returning to photograph the “Rhododendrons Bureavii – Subsection Taliensia” the same tree I captured on my initial induction day. As the vibrant amber oranges where still present in my head, hoping to get some closer shots with the macro lens. I loved how these turned out! As I felt the various compositions gave a great context to the plant’s shape/form, almost alien to Scotland’s hereditary plants. Experimenting with direction of light in order to highlight strong characteristic such as the gentle orange fuzz that under coats the leaves. This was very threptic for me as I continuously lose track of time, hyper fixated on one plant.

Remembering the names/pronunciation however can be a nightmare! As the number of variations can be overwhelming, ensuring each of your images is labelled correctly. To help with work flow I’ve ensured that after every set of images I take of a singular species I will photograph the plants title card, followed by a blank shot. This aids the editing process as each file must be accompanied by the correct label, allowing the social media department to efficiently title their posts.

To my surprise I was scrolling through Instagram to finally see one of my image’s used of their page! This was encouraging as it was evident, they must have liked my images for mines to be featured at the front of the series. I was also stunned that they selected the “Blur Atlas Cedar” out of all my options form the last two week. Certain they would pick the images from my snow drop series. Nevertheless, I guess it is down to personal preference and they may eventually get featured in future.
