First Day On the Job

Writer's picture: Heather GrahamHeather Graham

So, this week was my first week shooting for the botanic garden’s social media! I was dead excited to finally get started. Rushing out the gardens with my camera in hand, immedietly on arrival . It was nice to see some familiar faces like Richard and his team working hard to maintain the gardens, stopping to chat for a while. I chose to focus my attention on the various Snowdrop species as the previous week Richard and Lynsey mentioned the public’s fascination with them. Therefore, I thought it was a good idea to capture them whilst they where in peak bloom. I had a lot of fun using the macro lens I borrowed from uni, getting close to my subject, and experimenting with extreme shallow depths of field. Finding some minor difficulties with stability and focusing due to the wind, nevertheless with some patience I was able to get the hang of it. However as much as I liked the abstract feel to some of my images whilst experimenting, I chose not to share these. As it was made apparent that the photographs where to suit the existing style of their social media. As it is a wide demographic that follows their page and by keeping the photographs simple it will cater to everyone’s liking. Regardless, for personal I will still share them today, as they have a painterly feel caused by the motion bur.

Since valentine’s day is fast approaching, I also thought it would be appropriate look for resemblance of this in nature. I was unsure how I would depict this until I realised that many of the snowdrops appeared to be coupling up, as they cuddled together. I thought this would be perfect for their social media and would generate some online traffic to their page.

Whilst roaming around the gardens I also found it amusing all the construction currently taking place, as the several men tackle the brash job of trimming the trees. I was also introduced to the botanics cat Marley! As it turns out he permanently lives within the gardens and is cared for by the staff. I will be sure to be snapping photographs of him at any given opportunity.

After a long morning of roaming the gardens, I met up with Lynsey and Victoria for some lunch where we got talking about how to log into our temporary staff emails. Providing us with the appropriate access to send over images. With the day getting late I rushed home to start filtering through and editing my photographs, in hopes they are pleased with images so far.
