Invasion of the Daffodils

Writer's picture: Heather GrahamHeather Graham

This week on my return to the gardens I found a flurry of yellow daffodils, as we come closer to the first day of spring. Alongside a variation of rhododendrons, ranging from candy floss pinks to blood reds. However, the highlight of my day was catching a gentle dropping of snow. I was left disappointed that the snow passing was too light to capture even for my macro lens. Nevertheless, I was able to get back to my car before the weather conditions harshened. I also got a unique photograph of the rhododendron, which I was really proud of where the angle makes the flowers appear as though they are wings of a dragonfly. With the small buds mimicking it eyes and the thin spindling branches similar to an insects legs. However, the other compositions of the plant where more traditionally linked their origin to Asian. Photographing them from a low POV to keep hints of the blue sky braking through the branches, reminiscent to botanical Chinese wallpaper or fabrics.

I also got some lovely feedback from Charlotte, head of the social media team stating my “pictures are becoming a weekly treat!” and was even asked if one of my photographs could be used for the main cover photo for their website. Of course, I said yes and was absolutely overjoyed that they even wanted to use my photo. This is having boosted my confidence and can’t wait to get back to the gardens and start snapping again. I’ve also been experimenting with making botanical gifs due to another module so I think I will approach Lynsey this week and ask if they also might like to use them for their social media.

It's supposed to be raining on my next visit so I’m going to ensure to wrap up as there has been some threats of snow fall. However, despite how cold I might be I’m curious to see what other dynamic shots I may get with the water droplets or even snowflakes landing onto the plants.

My final thoughts for this week are just to continue pushing myself forward and stay motivated as it has been a bit difficult to remain consistent each week with my time schedule. As some of my university modules have been requiring more attention. Therefore, I’m trying to remain a healthy balance of my workload.
