Return to the Gardens

Writer's picture: Heather GrahamHeather Graham

During this week’s visit I was amazed to see the progression of life now present in the gardens, with colour slowly reappearing. With Easter fast approaching I thought it would be beneficial to capture some flowers that emulate spring colours, hunting for pastel tones. I didn’t have to look far as there where some vibrant Crocus freshly planted next to the public café. The white, purple, and yellow bulbs, had to be intentionally planted together for the season, therefore I spent most of my morning moving around the flowers, waiting patiently waiting for the light to change. After editing my photographs, I began to make further correlations between the pointed closed bulbs and easter eggs! With their similar silhouettes sharing a resemblance. Evidently feeling confident in my choice of subject matter as there will be up and coming easter events for children, making my images suitable for promotion. I was also able to snap a shot of a bee, which I am really proud of as there isn’t many bees this early in the year, however I look forward to spotting them more as we welcome the warmer seasons.

I also got to experience further sections of the nursery and horticulture gardens that were closed off my previous visit. Where I got to witness plants and flowers before they are transported into the gardens. However, due to their fragile states I had to ensure I was careful not to disturb their growth process. I plan to return to back to these locations on my next visit as there was an abundance of species I can’t wait to photograph.

For the rest of my day, I chose to roam the gardens in search for any new life, stumbling across garden workers, photographing their process as I pass. I felt it might be beneficial for me in future to capture everyday worker moments. As I’m unsure when I will next have this level of access and opportunity to full explore behind the scenes. Inevitably gaining more experience with portraiture, as I attempt to build my confidence with asking strangers for a photograph.

Final updates include my snowdrops being posted on RBGE Instagram page for the snowdrop festival! With Lynsey really pleased with the work Victoria and I producing so far. I am still waiting to hear official feedback from the marketing team, but Lynsey has clarified she will hear from them this week therefore by next Tuesday I should know their thoughts. However, momentarily I aim to continue photographing as hunting for the right moments.
