Today is Induction Day

Hello and welcome to my blog!

I am here to declare I have finally competed my first day at my new work placement and pleased to state I absolutely loved it. This is no shocker as I have been anticipating working with Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens photography team, for the longest time. It’s always been a pipedream of mines to work within this environment, as I've always enjoyed visiting the botanics as well as caring for my own plants. With my daily ritual of bringing home another houseplant whenever I dare to leave the house completely taking over my life! It's fair to suggest I was utterly nervous yet excited for my induction day.

Setting out on my day I initially felt confident and optimistic; however, this was quickly hindered when I sat amongst two hours of traffic whilst commuting, to eventually realise that my Googles maps had misguided me on my journey to the gardens leaving me stranded at the wrong meet up spot. Left worrisome that I might be late on the first day I frantically locate a staff member within the botanics that aided to my rescue, as they helpfully explained how to get to the correct building. Just within the nick of time I was greeted by leader of the placement Lynsey with big smiles, allowing myself to be immediately calmed as I had made it there.

Throughout my tour of the grounds, I got a lovely atmosphere from all the maintenance workers and employees, as everyone was more than happy to introduce themselves and explain their role within the gardens. Inevitably grounding any anxious doubts. This comfortability was further reinforced by my classmate Victoria as she will be working alongside me during the placement, adding a familiar face to my weekly visits. Whilst on our the tour it was intriguing to see all the various roles that carry on behind the scenes as Richard, head of the gardening team, works to distribute the placements/variations of the plants. Whilst inside the science building researchers delicately photograph the various species of dried botany that has been preserved for historical documentation.

We where also shown the studio where Lynsey will photograph any encased plants and even botanical artwork/books that are on display or available within the buildings. Entirely unveiling my initial perception of the gardens as this is kept hidden from the public.

Finalising the day, myself, and Victoria where able to grab a nice lunch with Lynsey, as we shared stories and got to know one and other better. Leaving me thrilled to return as I anticipatingly wait to start photographing the plants to promote posts for their social media.
